Subject: adapt-talk: RE: soccer for people in wheelchairs
Depending on what the student wants to achieve, my suggestion would be to
firstly ask the student how they would like to contribute to the game. The
mechanics of soccer promote the use of an extremity to propel the ball.
This
does not necessarily have to be a lower extremity if a student has little
or
no use of their legs. Why not adapt the rules slightly and have the
student
in the wheelchair use a stick (hockey like stick or baton) to propel the
ball using their arms. They could even use their hands if the student in
the
wheelchair and the rest of the group were in agreeance. The principle
behind
inclusion is to ensure that participation is fun and enjoyable, whilst
challenging the student to achieve a certain level of competence in
physical
activity. In a classroom environment you options are endless.

Dear adapt-talk,

I'm in a graduate class at TWU with Dr. Carol Huettig, (Project Inspire's
Coordinator) titled: Administration and Service Delivery in Public School
APE.
We are studying issues confronting APE/special education and would like
your
responses to the following question. What is the single most significant
issue
affecting contemporary Adapted Physical Education in the next millenium?
One-
word answers or phrases are fine. Thank you. Cathy Simbeck

Subject: adapt-talk: request for articles
I am on the editorial board of Teaching Elementary Physical Education, and
I need articles on any aspect of adapted physical education relelated to
elementary and middle school children. Articles should be between 7-10
pages double spaced, and they should be highly applied (i.e., how to
articles are the best). Send the article to me, and it will be reviewed
by
me and one other professional in APE. If accepted, it will then be sent
to
the editor of TEPE for publication. There is a place in the next several
issues of TEPE for an APE article, so the turn-a-round for publication can
be pretty quick (as quickly as 6 months from the time you send it to me if
the article does not need a lot of editing). Send articles with a disc
(IBM) to me at the following address (you also can email me the article
through an attachment - I have Word and Word Perfect):
