Subject: adapt-talk: Wheel chair bumpers
I have several students with Spina Bifida and I attach bumpers to their
wheel
chairs by using a sheet of corrugated cardboard, cut to size so it does
not
drag or interfere with the students feet. I have been playing with small
wings to each side by just making the board longer and bending the sides.
It's not as stiff as I would like but it works pretty well. Because the
sheet of cardboard does not really extend past the
normal plains of the wheel chair the students feel more comfortable
maneuvering than they did with a box. I use Velcro to attach the board to
the chair -- the self adhesive type on the cardboard and a fabric type
around
the legs of the chair. I only put the board in the front of the chair.
We
even decorated the cardboard with laminated wrapping paper (attached with
hot
glue) so it looks cool. Hope this helps.
