Keeping with the theme of sharing ( and caring) , I should like to add some information that is aligned not only with Fall Activities /Motivational Approach, but also a reference to a lifetime of fitness . This was a combination of the mindset thread started by John Hichwa , our world famous moderator ,( who has lead us through many successful years) , and a pod cast /article that I did for PELINKS4U , which will also be posted for the Novemer issue. [ http://www.pelinks4u.org ]. There will be a link posted at the end of this message . Here is brief message that hopefully will inspire or re-tool our way of thinking :
Addendum : Remember when we were kids and how easy it was to just let things go ? To live without worry? If we want to motivate our students , then (we) have to recycle that childhood innocence .
Bring that magic from childhood and explore . Let our imagination run free. That will come in our lessons with heaps of creativity and enthusiasm . Just like the new movie ”Where the Wild Things Are “ , we can develop ideas , motivation , exploration and let our lessons provide amazing things if we can go outside our comfort zone. This will challenge the students into better performances . Build on current competencies and extend that into a new challenge or skill . This can give you feedback about any results.
From there you can adjust and resolve any mistakes that were made . Gradually , you will focus on small gains and then add more small chunks to incorporate models for skill development .
All of this will develop a change so we can make a difference , but this will take time , and now is that time to make it happen . There should be no fear of failure , but it is necessary to take that first step . Try something new and just go for it . Examine what may be holding you back , and possibly examine what mindset is halting performance levels or behavioral development . Here are some ideas to ponder :
· Learning is like a contact sport
· When developing a new skill ,if its wrong do it quickly . Figure out what you did wrong , and learn from it.
· Adapt /modify
· Take charge today , not tomorrow
· Your aren't born with intelligence, it is grown
It is imperative to use real life situations when making lessons . There is a plethora of ideas in the “real” world. It may be movies , TV or video game simulations , too .
Use every opportunity to incorporate the mass media into games and activities , and then adapt or modify according to their levels of experience . Change is inevitable and it can challenge you, but you can make a difference to inspire and educate . The hardest part is really setting out to do it .
The same can be used as an incentive to our students and motivate them to become involved in a lifetime of fitness . That growth may meet with some failures , but with our leadership and expertise will make that transition a rewarding experience . The Fall Activities , whether in the gym or in nature can excite the students to find a level they feel comfortable with , but also lends itself to learn from past mistakes . Continue to try and not permit any limitations as a roadblock to succeed.
The entire premise of the Fall Activities is to get out side and just do something whether it be in the neighborhood or any place that has the facilities . All of this is inherent upon the carry over from the gymnasium and school grounds . The P.E. teacher should give the information and skills through developmentally appropriate activities , which will serve as an impetus to get the students excited and interested in P.E. class.
Note : I had the honor of talking( in person) with John Hichwa . It was a fantastic experience . We shared . We cared( always about our students and PE profession) . This is what the caring and sharing thread is all about . It can be accomplished in discussion groups , audio and video conferencing , conferences, conventions and in-services. (We) are all in this together . The time is now to spread the word , share ideas and advocate what we do is just as important as the classroom teachers . As John Hichwa says" we aren't just teachers ." We are so much more . We are the real doctors of the health reform debate . All we have to do is show the results ,and then everybody will listen .
