What are some fun and creative ways in which to get the kids involved in creating their own environment they can strictly call their own?

I think the best way to create a great environment for your students is to give them some simple choices about class time.
On Fridays you can let them choose their favorite games/activities.
Let them decorate the gym with their accomplishments.
Decorate the gym with posters of their progress or group achievements.
Let the students choose appropriate music for use during class.
but most of all I think enthusiasm from the teacher goes the farthest, especially in elementary school. If you are having fun they will probably have fun as well.
